Ok, I don’t normally give people or places a public ripping unless they deserve it, but I’ve been holding this one in.
When I first started college my whole gang would go out every Tuesday to the local B-Dubs and pound 20 wings. This is because of the awesomeness of 30 cent wing night. We looked forward to this every week and rarely did a week go by that we didn’t perform this ritual, but like always things were destined to change.
When I was a senior in college, for no apparent reason, raised the price of wings on Tuesdays to 35 cents a piece, and even with the increase my crew and I faithfully continued to support Tuesday night wings at BW3’s with no complaint. We were a peaceful people who only wanted cheap, quality wings served up with the occasional ball game. Little did we know that the winds of change were not through blowing.
Last Tuesday I was making the weekly stop at B-Dubs with a co-worker of mine and like usual I order 10 spicy garlic and 5 honey BBQ wings and when I got my bill I saw that it was a little high. When, I politely inquired about the obvious mistake the cashier had made she rudely snapped back to me, “Wings are now, 40 cents a piece on Tuesdays!”
Never in my life have I felt such betrayal. This was the last straw for me! So, on Tuesday April 17 Buffalo Wild Wings lost one of its most loyal customers and supporters. I will no longer be taken advantage of by purchasing overpriced little chicken wings. I will now only be eating wings at Applebee’s between the hours of 5-7pm.
Some may call me cheap, but I the consumer, have had enough of this wing gouging and will tolerate it no more.
Rant over.
This past week I had a unique experience. Being spring break here in Oldham County all of my co-workers went on vacation, and I stayed home. I’m a bit behind on some long range things because of the recent work I have done on our new site, so I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to really buckle down and get some work done with no distractions. Well, while it was, it was also a strangely eerie week. There was no buzz to the office at all. Normally the phone is ringing off the hook and people are stopping by left and right, but this week the phone rang like twice and only the fire inspector came the door for our annual check-up.
As I spent this time in solemn serenity I realized something; without the human contact that I was used to having on a daily basis I was rendered to a totally different mindset. I couldn’t create, I had no one to bounce ideas off of, and I had no one to break the day up for me.
I guess what I’m saying is that many times I have said that working at a church office is often difficult because of all the hustle and bustle, but without this activity the office just isn’t what it should be. I can’t wait for some normalcy to return to my life come Monday morning.
I am very excited to announce that I have finally finished RVCC’s new site and it is now fully launched! It has many cool features that will be useful both to members and people who know nothing about the church. Things like: streaming sermons, church calendar, program and ministry information, direct contact with staff and ministry leaders, and all the information about the church and its purpose you could want.
A special thanks goes to my cohort on this project, and big brother, Josh Young. He is a vet with web design and acted as my “web-design-guru” on this venture.
Take a minute and check it out!
Ok…so I used to be from Cincinnati and I know how big of a deal opening day is up there. This year the city’s beloved mayor Mark Mallory was given the task to throw the opening pitch, and it didn’t go so well. I mean, to say it didn’t go well is an understatement! It was a horror show! I have never seen a throw that bad before.
At first I chalked it up to nerves, but he was on Kimmell the other night and they asked him to throw a few more, and they were all that bad. I mean, if you’re going to get out in front of 25,000 people or however many where there at the stadium and throw a ball maybe you should practice up so you don’t look like a total loser.
I just thought that anyone who hasn’t seen this footage should have the opportunity to laugh harder than they have laughed in a while. Enjoy.
This past week I got quite a surprise when I discovered our drummer would not be able to make it to rehearsal because of a school function. I mean, we’ve done worship without drums before, but this was a big Sunday. Not only was it palm Sunday, but it was our church’s 10 year anniversary Sunday. There were probably more people there than will be at our Easter services, and yeah that’s big! So, the rest of my team and I put our heads together at rehearsal and nothing sounded great. I mean most things sounded good, but it wasn’t up to par with what our congregation is used to and we didn’t want to present anything less than what we normally do on such an important Sunday.
So, here’s where it gets interesting. One of my guitarists says, “Well you play drums. Why can’t you just lead from them?” If you are a worship leader I don’t need to tell you all the things wrong with that statement, but without any other choices I gave it a try. Much to my surprise it quickly became easy for me to sing and play at the same time, and after a couple more hours of practice we did it on Sunday morning.
It only worked because I had three other singers out front to visually lead, but it really wasn’t that difficult. I obviously had comments from numerous people after the service who loved seeing me doing something a little different and one elder of the church said, “You look like Phil Collins up there; it was great!”
Well, I am not Phil Collins, but after my first drumming/singing experience I feel like I will definitely try it again sometime.
