Since the price of a gallon of gas has soared to over $3.45 in our little piece of the world I have began the moped talk again with my wife. For those of you that don’t know me this is something I bring up about once a year. I have always wanted one, and I just think they are awesome. You don’t need an extra license, insurance, or tags. Granted there are a few more restrictions on them, but I think it would be a great idea for keeping gas money in my pocket. I mean I work a mere 3 miles from home, which could turn into a 15 minute journey on a moped, so why not give it a try.
My question to you world is this. Are mopeds are lame as my wife thinks they are, or am I preparing to start yet another trend? Let me know what you think.

Dude, buy a bicycle and stay in shape :-).
Because I’d have to side with your wife on this one.

I rode a moped as a teenager because I wasn’t yet old enough to get a driver’s license. (You could get a moped license in Ohio at 15.) I became known as “Moped Mike” for a time. Was it dorky? Possibly, but I didn’t care. A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. One word of caution…if there are any sizable hills on your commute, get ready to walk up them. Doesn’t take much of a hill to make your moped useless!

Most people would side with my wife on this, but I’m a man that goes against the flow. However, I might have to rethink the decision if people start calling me “Moped Joel”.

Yeah, I think that mopeds are as geeky as your wife does. I think your two options are:
a) Buy a bike. Since it isn’t a huge trek, you might want to get a cruiser or a hybrid. A more “athletic” bike would work, too, but might be overkill if you don’t plan on riding regularly.
b) Buy a scooter. While mopeds are geeky, a nice Vespa is the opposite. Granted, those aren’t the cheapest, but they’re good on gas, too.
Plus, “Moped Joel” definitely doesn’t have a nice ring to it.
